Let's talk some more about tailoring to your wants and needs. Yes, you can customize the location of the panes. Yes, you can hide and reveal them as needed. Yes, you can customize the size and look of the mode buttons. But how about those toolbars? As you may have guessed, they are also ready to be what you need, when you need it.
Firstly, you can display or hide toolbars in Manage and View mode.
In Manage mode, click View | Toolbars, and then select the toolbar you want to display or hide.
Here's an illustration of a couple toolbars hidden.
The same basic process can be used to customize in View mode. Go to View | Toolbars, and then select the toolbar you want to display or hide.
And here, both of the toolbars are hidden.
Now how about specifying what's on a toolbar? Yup, that's within your power as well. In Manage mode, you can customize the Main toolbar and File List toolbar, which includes being able to add, remove, and rearrange buttons. Also, you can display or hide text labels and tool tips for the buttons on these toolbars.
All right, let's open up the Customize dialog where we can achieve all this. Go to View | Toolbars | Customize... Or click the drop-down arrow, located to the right of the Main toolbar or File List toolbar, select Add or Remove Buttons, and then select Customize.
To display or hide text labels next to buttons on toolbars, click the Toolbars tab in the Customize dialog. Then, with the toolbar you want to affect selected in the Toolbars field, enable or disable the Show text labels checkbox.
Here we are with text labels turned on for each of the toolbars.
Next, you can click the Options tab of the Customize dialog box and select or deselect the Show ScreenTips on toolbars checkbox to display or hide tool-tips. Or, you can select or deselect Show shortcut keys in ScreenTips to show keyboard shortcuts in the tool-tips.
Now, let's look at View mode. Here you can customize the Bottom toolbar. You can add and remove buttons by clicking the drop-down arrow to the right of the buttons on the toolbar. Then select Add or Remove buttons, then mouse over Bottom Toolbar, then select the name of the button you want to display or hide.
In View mode, you can also use the Customize dialog to rearrange buttons. Using that same drop-down arrow, choose Add or Remove buttons, and then select Customize. With the Customize dialog open, you can rearrange buttons by dragging and dropping them on the toolbar as you please.
You can follow the same steps as above to get tooltips to show up for the buttons.
And to get text labels as well.
But let's say you've changed it in a variety of ways, but in the end, it's not really how you want it after all. You really want to go back to the way it was, but you can't remember how it was. (This is me. I'm talking about me right now.) Fear not. You can reset everything. This applies to Manage and View mode. In the Customize dialog, on the Toolbars tab, press the Reset All button.
You can also revert quickly and painlessly by going to View |
That's all for now. Go forth and customize those buttons! Let us know in the comments how you do.
