What is HDR?

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is created post-processing, and consists of finding a balance in the light to dark spectrum. When shooting a scene or subject that exceeds the camera’s dynamic range, the highlights tend to get washed out and turn white. Alternatively, the lowlights become murky and turn black. HDR allows you to create a photo with a remarkably high dynamic range that could not otherwise be achieved within a single photo without post-processing.

How Does HDR Work?

HDR is created by taking a series of images of the same scene with varying apertures and shutter speeds, resulting in a range of bright, medium, and dark images. Through advanced post-processing software, these images are combined to create a single image comprised of the most focused, well-lit, and colourful parts of the scene.
